# How to check a strength workout in Apple Health

First confirm that your recording app saved the session. Then find the matching workout in Health and check its source, time and permissions. A set log and a Health workout are separate records.

## Find the individual workout before changing settings

Open the app that recorded your strength session and find its completed workout. Check the date, approximate start and end, and whether its save flow finished. Then open Health on iPhone, find Activity, and open Workouts. Apple uses this category for workout records. [1] Look for the same session rather than judging success from your daily rings alone.

Within a Health data category, Show All Data lets you inspect individual entries; Data Sources & Access identifies contributing sources. [2] Use the date and time to find the relevant entry, then inspect the details available for it. Menu placement can differ by iOS version, so search Health for Workouts if you cannot find the category directly.

| Detail | What it helps establish |
| --- | --- |
| Date and start time | Whether you found today’s session rather than another workout with a similar name. |
| End time or duration | Whether the record covers the session you finished, or only part of it. |
| Source app or device | Which recorder supplied the entry. This matters when more than one app is installed. |
| Workout type | Whether the entry is the strength session you expected rather than an unrelated activity. |
| Available metrics | Which measurements are present. A missing heart-rate series and a missing workout are different issues. |

For example, if your lifting app shows a session from 18:05 to 18:52, a Health entry beginning at 18:05 from that app is a better match than an older workout with a similar calorie total. These times are illustrative. Use your own recording history and do not expect estimates from different apps to be identical.

## Check workout permission for the app that should write it

In Health, open your profile, then Apps under Privacy, and choose the recording app. Review its allowed categories. Apple notes that an app can also have its own sharing settings. [3] Check both places for the feature you intended to use rather than enabling unrelated categories.

Health access is granted separately for reading and saving different data types. [4] An app being allowed to read your workouts does not mean it can save a new workout. Equally, allowing workout writes does not prove the app has finished and exported this particular session. Permission is one part of the path from recording to a visible Health entry.

Check the recording app’s current instructions for whether it writes workouts, when it does so, and whether previously completed sessions can be exported. Turning permission on today should not be treated as a promise that all earlier sessions will appear. If the app offers a retry or export control, use its documented flow and then look for the matching entry again.

## If another app cannot see the workout, check Health directly

A workout can exist in Health while being absent from another app’s history. Apple deliberately limits what an app can learn about denied read access, so an empty query can resemble an absence of data. [5] Check the entry in Health itself, then review the receiving app’s read access and any date or activity filters it applies.

This distinguishes an export problem from a display problem. If Health contains the right entry, repeatedly re-exporting from the original logger may be the wrong next step. Record which app cannot see it and whether that app shows other workouts from the same source.

## If the Watch finished but the phone has no session

Start by checking the Watch’s completion state and its connection to the paired phone. Apple’s connection checks include bringing the devices close, checking Airplane Mode, and making sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on iPhone. [6] Reopen the recording app on the appropriate device and check whether it indicates a pending save or transfer.

Keep any visible set details before restarting or reinstalling an app. If the Watch still has the only copy of the session, a reset is not a useful first experiment. Write down the exercises and completed sets if necessary, then follow the app’s support guidance. There is no universal transfer delay that applies to every workout app.

| What you can confirm | Next question |
| --- | --- |
| No completed workout in the recording app | Was the session ended and saved, or is it still active or awaiting confirmation? |
| Saved in the app, absent from Health | Does this installed version support Health workout export, and is writing workouts allowed? |
| Present in Health, absent from another app | Can the receiving app read workouts, and is it filtering this source, date or workout type? |
| Present twice with similar times | Which source wrote each entry? Were two recordings or an extra manual entry created? |
| Workout exists, heart rate is missing | Was heart rate recorded and shared? Investigate that metric separately from the workout save. |

## Missing heart rate does not mean the workout disappeared

Inspect the workout record first, then investigate the missing measurement. Apple says Watch fit and movement affect heart-rate readings, and some motion patterns are more suitable for reliable readings than others. [7] Check fit and the relevant settings before the next session, but do not fill a missing series with invented values.

Your exercise history remains useful even when a sensor metric is absent. Weight, completed reps and set count answer questions about the lifting you recorded. A heart-rate graph answers another question. Use [estimated 1RM, volume and rep records](https://quietgains.app/journal/estimated-1rm-volume-rep-prs) to understand those comparisons without treating calorie estimates as a strength score.

## What should I do about duplicate workouts?

Compare the source, start and end of each entry before deleting anything. Two similarly named workouts can be legitimate separate sessions. If they are duplicates, decide which record represents the session you want to retain, including any measurements it contains. Changing source priority is not a substitute for checking the actual workout entries.

Use the narrowest deletion available and read the confirmation carefully. Apple warns that deleting Health data can remove it from devices that sync that data through iCloud. [3] Do not delete all data from an app merely to fix one duplicate. Check the remaining workout after the change.

## Can I add a missing strength workout manually?

Apple provides an Add control in Health’s Workouts category for manual entries. [1] First establish that the original record is absent and that an app export will not create another copy. Enter details you know rather than guessing measurements. A manual duration entry does not recreate the Watch’s original sensor readings or restore the exercise-by-exercise log in your training app.

## What information helps support resolve a missing session?

- The recording app and version, plus iPhone and Watch software versions.
- The session date and approximate start and end, including time zone if you travelled.
- Whether the recording app shows a completed session and whether Health contains a matching entry.
- The source of any matching or duplicate Health record, and the relevant permission state.
- The step that failed: finishing, transferring, exporting or viewing in another app.
